This isn't the first time I've had this exact same problem from steam games either. I'm on windows 8 with an i7 processor and a Nvidia Geforce 745M graphics card. I've played the game through episode two but hadn't touched it in a while until recently because I needed to catch up on episodes.

The screen stays black for a few seconds then it goes right back to my desktop with no error message or anything to indicate that the game has failed to launch. When I open the game, either from steam or from the desktop, it says: 'preparing to launch The Wolf Among Us,' and then the screen goes black as though it's actually loading into the start menu for the game.
